With Scandinavian attitude
My first job in the motoring industry had been for Volvo Truck and it was there where I fell in love with the Swedish and their way of doing business. Pioneers in safety, Volvo has always prioritized in taking care of the whole family- from the very first safety belt ever to the highly advanced rearward-facing child car seat. A synonym of safety and revolutionary in engineering excellence means that their vehicles are trustworthy, dependable and truly a good investment.
Their close correlation with safety means that they are ideal choices for families and in a country like South Africa where gruesome vehicle accidents are a daily occurrence, it certainly gives you peace of mind knowing that you are driving around in a vehicle that is one of the safest around. The XC60 has what I like to call goldilocks syndrome- the S90 is too big and the S40 is too small but the xc60 is just right for a medium sized family.
What is most striking about this vehicle is its diagonally barred grille which proudly showcases the Swedish name. Accompanied by a set of stylish T-shaped LED headlight and smooth flowlines creates a distinguishingly modish front that definitely won’t be missed in any side mirror. These LED’s are enhanced with Daytime Running and Auto Highbeam (AHB) while the LED taillights have Side Marker Lights. The roof is enhanced with aluminium roof rails as well as a Laminated Panoramic Moonroof with Power Sunshade for the whole family to enjoy.
19-inch alloy wheels are encased in dramatic arches and showcase this vehicle’s robust athletic ability which is furthered by chiselled inserts on the side a moulded rear. Falling between the XC40 and the XC90 means that it has an elevated height along with enlarged dimensions which makes it assertive and confident on the road without being too domineering and overbearing. Overall I appreciate the vehicle’s simplistic styling and minimalistic elegance, it’s a true embodiment of the Swedish tradition and essence.
The cabin represents true and genuine Swedish craftsmanship. With a carved wrap-around dashboard and stylishly designed controls, the fascia is unique and is sure to provide the driver with an at-ease and in-control feel. Complementing wood and Iron Ore Aluminium inserts makes it quite easy to understand why this vehicle was selected to be the European Car of the Year in 2018. Leather upholstery ensures a stylish seating while a 10-way, Power Front Seats with Powered Lumbar Support and Driver Seat Memory guarantee that the driver is always and uncompromisingly comfortable. A leather steering wheel, Aluminium sill plates and an automatic dimming interior mirrors are but a few of many luxurious add-ons that enhances the cabin’s overall high-quality feel.
The car is accredited for being extremely user-friendly and a good family vehicle and this statement is rather easy to believe when looking at the interior- Volvo designed it in such a manner that mess and fuss are cancelled out making sure that it will be pleasant and enjoyable for the entire family. Thanks to the stretched wheelbase, the cabin is spacious especially in the rear which means road trips will be plentiful as well memorable. The boot sports an impressive 1 432-litres of space and with the wide rim and powered tailgate, it’s rather effortless to load and unload cargo. A nifty cargo cover is also included to shield your valuables from wandering gazes or even the picnic sandwiches from wilting in the sun.
The 9-inch touchscreen infotainment system is equipped with a 10 high-performance speakers, USB Input, SiriusXM Satellite Radio with 6-Month Subscription, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Voice Control and Bluetooth Connectivity with Audio Streaming. A Rear Park Assist Camera, Cruise Control, a Clean Zone Air Quality System, Two-Zone Climate Control, Remote Lock/Unlock, Engine Remote Start, Send to Car, Vehicle Tracking with four-year Complimentary Subscription and many, many more have all been included to provide you with utmost comfort and genuine convenience on the road.
Well is highly evident that the Volvo is as safe as a bubble-wrapped turtle strapped with a safety belt, so it comes as no surprise that the XC60 include safety features such as Hill Start Assist, Run-off Road Protection and Run-off Road Mitigation, Lane Keeping Aid, Driver Alert Control, Automatic Braking After Collision and Roll Stability Control. City Safety features Low and High Speed Collision Mitigation, Pedestrian, Cyclist and Large Animal Detection and additionally it also has Front, Side and Curtain Airbags with Driver Side Knee Airbag as well as front seats with Whiplash Protection.
This 2.0–litre engine produces 187kW of power and 350Nm of torque, meaning it’s spirited enough for city driving and powerful enough to haul the entire family and all their baggage (and snacks) on road trips. It has a fuel consumption of 7.3–litre per 100km, but I must say I think their estimate is a bit enthusiastic as I achieved a considerably higher number.
Looking at all the above mention offerings and knowing that it is, after all, a Swedish vehicle, I didn’t expect anything less than excellence behind the wheel of the XC60. Its drive, or should I say cruise rather, is buttery smooth and the handling is outstanding. This might be due to the fact that Volvo prioritises comfort over speed- they didn’t try to take all of these elements and squish it into one vehicle, rather they concentrated on the most import aspect, which is safety, and focused on championing that. This is a rather refreshing take on family SUV’s and I consider it to be perfectly fine as this is supposed to be a safe, family vehicle and not a tyre-smoking hot rod. As the saying goes slow and steady wins the race but more importantly- good things take time.
