Fierce and X-citing

The Ford Ranger is iconic in South Africa and is almost as common as finding ducks in a pond. The blue oval brand has decided to broaden the line up by introducing a new model to the range – the Ford Ranger FX4. The FX4 is available in two derivatives- a 4x4 and a 4x2 and is focused on the adventure-seeking family.

The Concept

Bakkies are a big part of our South African culture and it is nearly impossible to stand at a traffic light and not spot a Ranger in your radius as well. That is due to the fact that the Ranger brings two crucial aspects in a vehicle together- it’s a family vehicle but it’s also able to confidently take on the dirt road. With features such as the FordPass Connect making its debut on the FX4, I have no doubt in my mind that this new stunner is going to be doing well on South African soil.

The Look

As any other Ford Ranger, this bakkie is a beautiful beast with a domineering presence and I absolutely love the styling of the FX4. It differentiates from the standard Ranger with a pitch-black grille, black extended sports bars and the FX4 signatures on rear panels and the Tailgate.. 18-inch wheels give it a healthy boost while DRL headlights illuminate its path for this bakkie to go wherever its heart may desire, or should I say wherever your heart might desire?

The Feel

The cabin of the FX4 is striking and definitely not something that you would traditionally associate with the good, ole’ hard-working bakkie. Inside you will find a soft-to-the-touch leather-trimmed dashboard, steering wheel, gear lever and seats to ensure a luxurious feel to the cabin. Striking red stitching and FX4 logos embossed on front seats mixes things up and add some flair and uniqueness to the cabin. Styling aside, it still has the core beliefs of being spacious and utility-focused for the family to enjoy and the driver can rest assured knowing that visibility is excellent thanks to its elevated ground clearance.

The Features

Ford has gone out of its way to make this vehicle as comfortable and technology-friendly as possible, it is a family vehicle after all. The FordPass Connect is an example of that- this intuitive feature allows you to control the vehicle remotely by allowing you access to some of its features via the FordPass smartphone app, nifty, I know! SYNC®3 is standard on the FX4 and is clearly displayed on an 8-inch touchscreen and features voice activation, two USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Google Maps and Waze is also integrated for those who are like me that can’t even navigate their way through a grocery store without getting lost. In terms of safety, there are tons of features like ISOFIX and an array of airbags but what really stood out for me was the number of advanced driving aids this vehicle has. Hill Launch Assist, Rollover Mitigation, Adaptive Load Control, Trailer Sway Control, Traction control and a ESP brake system are but a few to be utilized on the FX4.

The Drive

The FX4 is a vehicle that will provide you with the first lively rumble to squeezing into a small parking spot and taking a breather. It’s fitted with a 2.0-liter Turbo diesel engine which means that is capable to challenge whatever South Africa has to offer with 132kW of power and 420Nm of torque. The automatic transmission version has a claimed fuel consumption of 6.8 liters per 100km which is terrific if you consider the sheer size of this bakkie. Overall, the FX4 meets all the family requirements and it excels in the smaller aspects as well- pull away is instantaneous and parking is easy thanks to the reversing camera.
