Adding the X-tra

We are familiar with the Opel Mokka since its arrival in 2015 but it has recently undergone remodeling and a striking little ‘X’ has been slapped onto its title. With more features, enhanced technologies and a striking new appearance, the Mokka X is ready to make its mark with the locals. After having my innings with it I’m sure it will have no problem with doing just that.

The Concept

This compact/crossover SUV is a perfect fit for a small to medium-sized families who enjoy searching for new adventures. Its eccentricity means it will definitely fit into nonconforming and trend-setting families. It’s a vehicle that’s unapologetically original and will definitely proclaim this to passersby.

The Look

The Mokka has a distinctive bubbly and voluptuous front end which I absolutely adore, and 19-inch alloys gives it a spunky attitude. With the additional ‘X’ mixed into the name also came a few modern designs such as the winged chrome grille and a fresh pair of fog lights in the front and rear integrated into the newly redesigned bumpers. Double purposed to not only be attractive and dazzling, but the Halogen headlights also feature Headlamp Levelling Control, LED Daytime Running Lamps (DRL), Automatic Headlight Control and Active High-Beam Assist for a brightly illuminated trip. Available on the Cosmo derivative is the Premium Lighting Pack which includes LED Headlights, Front Cornering Lights, LED RR Taillights and Directional Headlamp Control Beam (AFL), a good buy if you ask me.

The Feel

Stepping inside, the cabin is well laid-out and although utility-centered, it is still considerably stylish. A clean and neat dashboard and Jasmin Black leather upholstery provides the cabin with an individualistic quality finish. Its SUV status and enlarged physique grants the cabin with a generous amount of space for the front and rear passengers to enjoy. The boot can grow from 356-litre to 1305-litres and the rear seats split 60:40 for those eXtra bulky items. Something that I particularly liked was the rubber lining in the storage compartments, not only does this cancel out irritating rattling but it makes it easier to clean up spills and grass smears as well. The driver’s seating position is highly enjoyable due to leather steering wheel that has a tilt and telescope adjustment, audio controls, speed-sensitive power steering and heating. Furthermore, it also has height-adjustable and heated AGR-Certified Ergonomic front seats. It also includes a raised driving position which combined with the big windows offer a great visibility. Speaking of, the windshield is solar-absorbing, the rear has privacy glass and for more recreation, a sunroof is also available.

The Features

The 7-inch touchscreen IntelliLink infotainment system is equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth Connectivity, USB and six premium speakers. Electronic Climate Control, electric power windows, Cruise Control with a Speed Limiter, Electric, Heated and Foldable Side Mirrors, Rain-Sensor Wipers and an Auto-Dimming Rear-View Mirror. It also features front and rear Park Assist with a reversing camera which was a bit glitch but I reckon it’s still better than the good ole twist-and-search (and you’re sure to miss one or two of those pesky short poles, I know I have). Electronic Stability Programme (ESP), Hill-Start Assist, Pedal Release System, Tyre Pressure Monitor, ISOFIX child seat anchorage, anti-theft alarm, engine immobilizer and Remote-Controlled Central Locking ensures that you and your loved ones are always protected. Driver, passenger, front side and curtain airbags completes the safety package on the Mokka.

The Drive

This 1.4-litre engine produces 103kW of power 200Nm of torque, that’s more than enough performance for city driving and sufficient boost for the long weekend hauls. It has a reasonable fuel consumption of 6.5-litre per 100km that’s sure to save you some cheddar. The Mokka’s driving experience is to my liking- the steering wheel is light which is immensely beneficial when maneuvering and I must say that I quite like the fact that Opel allows me to drive the self-shifting SUV manually when the urge arises. It has a smooth and composed drive (minimal body roll through corners, score!) and not lacking in terms of performance. This jack of all trades is sure to provide your family with many happy journeys and smiles.
