Harmony for the whole family

Mazda Motor Corporation has recently celebrated their 100th anniversary and having sold more than six million units it’s safe to say that the Japanese automaker knows its stuff not only when it comes to quality vehicles but also to provide buyers with exactly what they want. Their Jinba-Ittai principal is all about having the vehicle in perfect harmony with the driver and I think that this principal has only been successful as well as beneficial for them. The Mazda3 is no exception to their unique designing and intuitive technologies, it’s a smart sedan with a stunning design and a regal drive, basically a great all-rounder. It’s available in different engines, transmission and, also in hatchback and sedan shape. I had the privilege to test the jutting-reared variant and is eager to report.

The Concept

This sedan is ideal for the businesswoman who wants to make a statement when rolling into work as it’s lavish and extremely eye-catching. It’s also suited for the mom with a small family as its safe, comfortable and its sedan shape offers plenty more boot spaces for school projects and sports gear than that of a hatch.

The Look

Sleek and shiny would be the first words I would use to describe the Mazda3. Instantly noticeable is the smooth body contouring and charming curves of this sedan’s physique and roofline. They have enlarged the grille and chrome finishing in the front hints at what high-quality features lays ahead in this vehicle. Dual chrome exhaust pipes and 18-inch silver metallic alloy gives it a sense of sporty swagger. The slender headlights aren’t only gorgeous to look at but are also highly specialized and feature auto on/off, LED, a Adaptive LED Headlamps (ALH) feature, a leveling feature and Daytime Running (DRL). In the back you will also find Rear Combination Lamps (RCL) to complete the sedans stunning look. A power slide and tilt glass sunroof, automatic and powered mirrors, and rain-sensing wipers are all examples of Mazda’s revolutionary designing and thinking.

The Feel

The inside of this beaut definitely matches the outside- its attractive juts about emits quality and grandeur. Made from luxurious materials and sporting an attractively laid out design, the cabin is certainly one for the books. The driver’s seat offers an extremely comfortable experience thanks to the seat having a 10-way power adjustment including for height and a powered, and adjustable lumbar support. Auto paddle shift switches, 7-Inch TFT LCD digital meter and leather on the steering wheel, gear lever and upholstery gives this cabin a distinctive lavish feel. For further convenience, the multi-function steering wheel is equipped with controls and it features a tilt and telescopic adjustment. A 444-litre is also flaunted due to the curvaceous rear of the sedan which allows plenty of space for the family and a 60:40 rear seat split will definitely help out to travel with awkwardly shaped items.

The Features

The 8.8-inch infotainment is equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, two USB ports, Bluetooth Connectivity, Integrated navigation and a 12 speaker BOSE® sound system with a subwoofer. Dual-zone air-conditioning, climate control with rear vents, cruise control, smart-advanced keyless entry, smart-keyless push-button engine start and front as well as rear electrically powered windows will ensure you of a comfortable and enjoyable drive. Safety and security are guaranteed by intuitive features such as driver, passenger, side and curtain airbags, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), ISOFIC child seat anchorage, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), Electronic Brake-force Distribution (EBD), Emergency Brake Assist (EBA), G-Vectoring Control Plus (GVC Plus), Blind Spot Monitoring (BSM), Rear Cross Traffic Alert (RCTA), Hill Launch Assist (HLA), rear parking sensors with a reversing camera, Auto door lock, a super lock system, a burglar alarm system and an immobilizer.

The Drive

This 2.0-litre DOHC S-VT engine is able to pump out 121kW of power and 213Nm of torque. This is more than enough push to provide you with comfortable city driving. It has a good fuel consumption of 6.2-litre per 100km (thank you start-stop technology!). The fact that this engine is turboless is actually an advantage, yes it doesn’t have that additional push but the amount of superior and refined driving you get from this vehicle is remarkable. Its smooth driving is also aided by the six speed automatic transmission that ensures you are comfortable throughout the whole drive, from near-stationary in bumper to bumper traffic to highway bolting. It’s clear that Mazda has done some tweaking to the engine; the steering is accurate, cornering is sure-footed and its purr has also been significantly reduced. Jinba-Ittai has undoubtedly been incorporated into the Mazda3 but don’t argue with me, go check it out for yourself.
