The power to surprise
I chose to put Kia’s slogan as the caption of this article because, to me, the Sportage is the genuine embodiment of the Korean brand and their offerings. After doing a bit of digging, I found that I wasn’t too far off when stumbling upon a few statistics. This SUV is responsible for a fifth of the brand’s sales and more than five million units have been sold globally! Now that’s impressive!
As one of their most popular and best-selling vehicles, the Sportage is sure to offer many families an SUV that is perfectly suited for their lifestyle and with a line-up of nine vehicles to choose from, you are guaranteed of just that. It ticks all the family-friendly boxes- it’s spacious, filled with specs and comes with an affordable price tag.
The signature Tiger-Nose grille has been tweaked and is highlighted by creasing on the bonnet for a tasteful appearance while the roof rack hints at the vehicle’s sporty athletic capability. The LED headlights are equipped with Daytime Running Lights, Automatic Light Control (with Escort and Welcome home function) along with a set of fog lights in the front frames it off to ensure you of a brightly illuminated drive. 19-inch alloys also help to elevate it to a 282-millimetre ground clearance and better visibility. It has folding electric mirrors that also include mirror indicators and boasts Rain Sensing Wipers to promise buyers many convenient and enjoyable trips. Overall the Sportage is a stunning vehicle and I’m confident that this head-turner will be dearly loved by everyone at the school’s drop off, in parking lots and at the family braai.
The interior is fully laid out in leather which can be found on the seats, steering wheel as well as the gear lever to provide it with a chic and plush feel. A neatly laid out dashboard creates a harmonised and relaxing interior which is pleasantly soft to the touch. Cabin space is plentiful, especially in the rear, due to the vehicle’s SUV status which will be highly appreciated by moms who have kiddies who that are fussy about their personal space. With a 60:40 rear seat split, the 466-litre boot expands to 1 455 litres and offers a flat loading surface to pack that little extra load you may have. I must say that the driver’s seat is especially comfortable thanks to electric seats and electric lumbar support as this affords for a more confident drive and fewer stresses (something moms can definitely do well with).
The infotainment system has received tweaking and now has an 8-inch display, RDS, six speakers all round Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth Connectivity with Voice Recognition, Navigation, and a USB ports in the front and one in the rear for the kiddies to charge all of their tech. A multifunction steering wheel allows you to conveniently access these features without removing your hand from the wheel or your attention from the road. To intensify its appeal to buyers, it also has a panoramic sunroof, Cruise Control and a wireless smartphone charger so no more worries with finding the right cable to charge your phone and getting tangled up is a thing of the past. The Sportage has automatic air conditioning and rear vents for all the passengers to enjoy this summer.
The Sportage is equipped with a range of safety features that include ABS, EBD, Electric Parking Brake with Auto Hold Function (EPB), Electronic Stability Control, Hill-Start Assist Control, Downhill Brake Control, ISOFIX child seat anchorage, six airbags and Data Dot. Other features to note is the central locking system with an engine immobiliser, Smart Entry with Push Button Start and Parking Assist Sensors in the front and rear with a camera. It is also worth mentioning that the structure of the Sportage has been reinforced with ultra-high tensile steel to make it one of the safest options in its segment. Overall, the Sportage’s specs are plentiful (and certainly decent considering its budget-conscious price) to ensure that every journey will be enjoyed, but most importantly, you will arrive safely.
The 2.0 CRDi engine produces 131kW of power and 400Nm of torque which, paired with the slick 8-speed automatic transmission, makes for a fitting and conquering city explorer. I earned a fuel consumption of 8.4-litre per 100km which is quite reasonable considering it is a self-shifter, it’s heavy and it’s jam-packed with the latest tech. The engine is responsive and offers punchy acceleration which is highly valued when overtaking, even at highway speeds, while the accurate steering provided me with the assurance to fling the vehicle through corners. What really peaked my interest- repetition, was the ride quality of the vehicle- its silky smooth and delivers a polished drive courtesy of the High-Performance Dampening which absorbs all the lumps and bumps which are always eagerly found when you are late to drop the kids at school and have a cup of scorching hot coffee in hand. Kia has done a great job with the Sportage’s and I think it’s a prime example of excellent handling.
