Kia Sorento EX 7-SEATER

The City Siren

The name itself, Sorento, is rather unique and had me intrigued, as outside Kia, I’ve never heard the name. It doesn’t have some adrenaline-rush or tough-and-concurring ring to it. This meant that investigation was necessary and after some online rummaging, I came up with an Italian town. Well…kind of... I found a small coastal town- Sorrento. Further digging got me a few interesting stories and beautiful pictures of sunny shores and crystal water. So why would Kia name their third-row-er after a small European town? Well, simple! The Greeks spun some tails and now there is rumoured to be Sirens in the water, and what is more alluring than a Siren?

The Concept

Like the Sirens of the seas, the Sorento will entice the entire family with its 7-seater capability and stylish new looks. It is versatile and reliable, making this crossover SUV an ideal medium-sized family option to look at.

The Looks

The Sorento has all the makings to bewitch South Africans with its charming chrome front and a proud road stance. It has an intricate grille, highlighted by upswept headlights and 18-inch alloys. Roof rails finish it off with signature SUV athleticism. It is worth mentioning that the headlight has LED Daytime Running, Auto Light Control and Escort as well as a Welcome Home Function. Talk about stealing your heart at first glance!

The Feel

The inside has a more subtle approach- it won’t steal your heart with its oozing charisma, rather it will grasp you firmly with its spaciousness and comfortability. The boot has 142-litres of space when the third row is pitched, 605-litres when it is folded but bend that second row and you have yourself a massive 1 662-litres of use. It also has plenty of nice-to-haves like leather seats, mood lighting, a rear USB port and a 3.5-inch Mono TFT LCD Information Screen. You will also have a luggage net to secure your goodies and a Wireless Smartphone Charger to keep you connected.

The Features

Speaking of connection- your phone doesn’t only make calls in the Sorento, it also connects to the infotainment system through Bluetooth, Auxillary and USB compatibility as well as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The cabin is highlighted by features like Smart Entry with Push Button Start, automatic Dual Zone air conditioning, all round electric windows and electric lumbar support. For the safety of the family, there is an expansive network of airbags, Data Dot, ISOFIX child seat anchorage and Impact Sensing Unlock. As if it isn’t tantalizing enough, it also has Cruise Control, a Cargo Security Screen and Steering Wheel-mounted Remote Controls.

The Drive

Kia is all about providing customers with an enjoyable and engaging drive. Of this, you are assured due to features such as Electronic Stability Control and Hill-start assist. The 2.2-litre engine is a pleasure to pilot- it pushes out 147kW of power and 440Nm of torque so can bet that the drive will be spirited and let’s not forget that the Drive Mode Integrated Type (DMIT) makes sure that the drive is adaptable and so comfortable. I also found out that the Sorento is very easy to park thanks to the  auto box,  all round Park Assist and a reverse camera. So the Sorento name is rather fitting- its definitely intriguing and I think Kia deserves a palm-burning high 5 for that!
