The Grandest people mover
Kia’s people mover, the Grand Sedona, was first presented as the Carnival back in 1999 and is a great alternative to larger SUV’s for families who require a bit more space. Although, in my opinion, it leans a bit more to the SUV segment than bus segment so this makes it the ideal in-betweener. It is a bit pricey but its worthy extra bills as it comes standard with plenty of specs and a promise of comfort.
The Kia Grand Sedona is obviously marketed towards bigger families with its stretched dimensions and ability to house a junior soccer team. This 8 seater will do well in daily driving but I think it will stand out on the long haul with its spacious dimensions and comfortable cabin. It’s a true value for money vehicle that offers the best of both world in the fact that it has all the standard features and a comfortable driving experience, yet it is still extremely economical and affordable.
This Kia is an attractive people mover, even if I have to say so myself. Typical stylish Kia features can be found in the front of the vehicle such as chrome coverings and upswept headlights. Enhanced with a Headlight Height Adjustment and Automatic Light Control with Escort and Welcome Home function, the headlights are sure to provide you with additional safety when illuminating dark and dreary roads. There is also projection fog lights in the front and LED combination lights in the rear and the Automatic Folding Mirrors have an integrated indicator. The Grand Sedona has a striking set of 18-inch alloy wheels as to keep it rooted and help with that top-heavy feel that is commonly found in these types of vehicles. Overall the Kia Grand Sedona is attractive and suitably styled for the family.
The cabin of this MPV is spacious and stylish- two words every busy mom wants to hear. Its airy and covered in high-quality materials to provide passengers with a pleasant experience when driving around in this road-tripper. All of the passengers will benefit from leather upholstery and the driver will also enjoy two way lumbar support, this is sure to be appreciated in those stretched trips to the coast. Even though the EX + comes standard as an eight seater, it is still extremely spacious and this is due to smart seating configurations and that fact that the spare wheel is fitted to the underbody of the Sedona rather than in the boot. Head, knee and legroom is also plenty for all passengers, even for rear passengers that are usually a bit neglected and cramped in, and the boot is big enough to fit all of the family’s luggage during the holiday season.
The 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system is equipped with an auxiliary input, USB ports (there’s one in the rear as well), Bluetooth Connectivity, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, 6 speakers, Integrated Satellite Navigation and a Wireless Smartphone Charger. Features to make each trip more pleasant and enjoyable found in the Sedona is dual zone air conditioning, glove box cooling, remote control audio, Cruise Control and all round electric windows. To park such a large vehicle can be quite a task, especially in the city, but luckily Kia thought ahead and armed the Grand Sedona with all round Parking Assist Sensors (PDC) as well as a Reverse Camera. Driving aids such as ABS, EBD, Electric Parking Brake with Auto Hold Function, Electronic Stability Control and Hill-start assist is listed in this vehicle. Advanced safety features are also integrated and these include Data Dot, ISOFIX Child Seat Anchors, a network of airbags, High Performance Damper and an Impact Sensing Unlock Function. The Sedona is fitted with just the right amount of safety features to calm mom’s beating heart, high quality connectivity and audio for the kiddies to enjoy and this all comes at an attractive price for dad to brag about at the next braai.
Powerd by a 2.2-litre engine, the Sedona can push out 147kW of power and 440Nm of torque. Every bit of this power will be used to haul around plenty of passengers and all of their cargo but not to worry as the vehicle is designed for this purpose and so will do well. It has an average claimed fuel consumption of 8.0-litres per 100km, this is rather impressive but I’m sure that when the vehicle is loaded to its maximum capacity (which will happen as there will always be friends sleeping over and the vehicle is surely capable), the consumption will rise a bit. With a slick 8 speed automatic transmission you are also promised of it being a smooth, buttery haul. The dropped vehicle feels well-weighted and so confident in its driving and a springy suspension soaks up bumps splendidly. What I like about this MPV, is its laid-back and relaxed driving style- in a typical larger vehicle manner, the Sedona prefers cruising to racing.
