Let’s go explore!
Built to be tough and to conquer, Isuzu vehicles always bring something different to the table. The MU-X is no exception to the rule and can be seen as an ideal family vacationer. I think is a terrific SUV for many reasons but don’t take my word for it, read on and find out why I believe this.
The MU-X is a bakkie based SUV with full 4x4 capability. This is a game-changer in the market as it allows for larger families to also enjoy the South African landscape and all that its wildlife has to offer. The facelift model keeps to the Isuzu roots, which is something I appreciated- as the saying goes, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. This is something Isuzu clearly believes in and I think that is why all their vehicles have such distinctive charm.
The MU-X is classified as a 7-seating exploring SUV and I can most certainly see why it has the exploring sticker to the name. It has a bold, tough look to it with 18-inch alloys and sporty roof rails. Its proud Isuzu heritage is displayed in the chrome grille with the iconic ISUZU badge in the front and with Bi-LED headlights, you can be assured that this SUV will be making headlines. I absolutely love the design of the MU-X and can’t wait to see what it will be doing on South African roads.
The cabin is kind of nostalgic- it is still deeply rooted in the Isuzu heritage with typical ISUZU characteristics including round dials for Climate Control and a meaty steering wheel. This is something to appreciate in such an advanced vehicle- however still traditional at the same time, creating a superb balance between classic and modern. Speaking of advancements, the MU-X has Automatic Climate Control, Cruise Control and electric windows and combined with sexy leather seats, this vehicle will do well with the family. Its family paired capability won’t be questioned when you look at the versatility of the vehicle- it has a 7 seat configuration and a 235-litre boot that can grow to 870 and 1 830-litres, that’s a lot of space! It is worth mentioning that the infotainment system is a bit dated and the camera isn’t that clear but this is all part of the traditional feel of the cabin and is easy to overlook.
The 6.5-inch infotainment system has big buttons- this is a small design feature but it’s a representation of Isuzu’s intuitive designing as it simplifies operation- try pressing tiny buttons while going over rocky terrain, easy? I think not! Although the infotainment system is a bit dated, it still boasts Bluetooth and Aux Connectivity, Navigation and 8 speakers sound system. Furthermore, you can access the rear-view camera through the LCD screen.
ABS, EBD, Brake-Assist System, Electronic Stability Control with Traction Control, Hill-Start Assist, Hill Descent Control and Trailer Sway Control are all the driving aids you can expect to find in this Isuzu. Furthermore, there is also your run of the mill airbags, Side-Impact Bars, a Collapsible Steering Column and ISOFIX child seat anchorage. Isuzu has really gone out of its way to safeguard this vehicle and its occupants.
It has a typical Isuzu engineered motor and you either hate the old school or love it- I love it- it’s nostalgic. It has that iconic cold morning coughs but not to worry because that unmistakeable throaty vroom soon follows. Let’s just get one thing straight- the MUX is designed for power and not for performance. That means that you’re not going to be racing over any finish lines but you will be able to haul the entire family, their luggage while latching on a trailer at the same time. This is thanks to a 3–litre engine that generates 130kW of power and 380Nm of torque coupled with an intuitive six speed manual transmission that is both accurate in its power deliverance and doesn’t strain itself to go over hilly terrains. This also lowers NVH levels considerably and makes the drive feel more like a buttery glide rather than a wild, bundu bashing.
