A gift on the road

Hyundai has become famous for their value for money, larger family vehicles. So much so that I’m inclined to say that the Korean manufactures have become almost synonymous with affordability and quality. One of the vehicles that have aided them in setting this trend, is the charming Santa Fe. This is because of its shopping list of features, demanding road presence and comfortable drivability.

The Concept

This seven seater SUV is currently in its fourth generation is also proudly holds the title pf being Hyundai’s most successful SUV in terms of sales. It is marketed towards larger families and will excel in day to day in the city by offering the experience of a sedan but with the benefits of a Sport Utility Vehicle.

The Look

The Hyundai is unmistakeable in rear view mirrors with its unique grille, chrome strip and slimmed headlights. These headlights are fully LED and feature a Static Bending as well as Daytime Running. It has a sportier and is rather rugged for a family SUV with its mesh detailing and large wheels. Speaking of these 20–inch alloys bumps the ground clearance and aids the athletic theme of the vehicle with the help of features like arch claddings and modified bumpers. The taillights feature LED as well and is now complemented by an alluring light bar and I should also mention that the side mirrors also feature and automatic and electric folding function. Overall, the Santa Fe is an attractive SUV and is sure to be appreciated wherever it might be found roaming the streets.

The Feel

Adorned in stylish leather, the seats of the Santa Fe are attractive and comfortable to sit in. The driver and front passenger will also find pleasure in electric seat adjustment as well as heating and ventilation. The interior has also had some work done under the knife and now has a lowered dashboard and curvaceous layout. A scattering of knobs and levers (including the new Terrain Mode selector) have all been neatly laid out on the dash for a clean and ergonomic feel. This complements the fresh and enlarged displays.

Due to the vehicle’s exterior nip and tuck, the inside benefits from sheer spaciousness. There is more room for all passengers to stretch out but the rear passenger especially benefit in the leg department thanks to the stretched wheelbase. Boot space is also remarkable with 547 litres that is able to grow to 1625 litres when the rear seats are folded. With a simple press of a button, the middle row slides forward to allow you convenient access to the third row so the kiddies won’t have any problem with quickly jumping in and out. The third row’s set up, limits cargo space but that is expected and it’s also worth mentioning that the tailgate is powered so loading and offloading is convenient. A panoramic sunroof also contributes to the airiness of the cabin and basks the passengers in sunny South African rays.

The Features

The fun continuous with a 7-inch infotainment system that is equipped with Apple CarPlay and Voice Activated Bluetooth. A multifunctional steering wheel means that you also have access to audio, Bluetooth, Cruise Control and on-board computer without diverting your attention from the road. ABS, Electronic Stability Program, Downhill Brake Control, Hill start Assist Control, Blind Spot Detection and Cross Traffic Alert are all driving aids to be found in the Santa Fe. Smart Key with Push Button Start, Climate Control, Cruise Control and all round Park Distance Control with a Rear View Camera is listed to give the driver and passenger ultimate comfort and peace of mind on the road. A network of airbags is integrated to complete the safety package and these include driver, passenger, side and curtain.

The Drive

The Hyundai Santa Fe is fitted with a 2.2-litre engine that allows it to produce 142kW of power and 440Nm of torque. It is, essentially, a people transporter and with this punchy motor, it will be sure to haul seven people and their luggage with ease. An 8.2-litres per 100km fuel consumption can be expected from the Santa Fe, which is rather impressive considering its size and this is due to clever designing and intuitive technologies. One of these is the Terain Mode selector which allows you to alter the vehicle and responses to suite the road and the driver’s style. Overall, the Santa Fe is terrific for the larger families when it comes to the driving experience and handling- it packs some punch (not too much) and has all the required characteristic like a supple suspension and direct steering.
