2 hot 2 handle

Since being introduced into the South African market, this Chinese brand has been a hit from the get-go. This is due to the brand’s uncanny ability to provide good-quality vehicles at an affordable and reasonable price. This economical price tag does not mean that they compromised on features or styling. Rather they have equipped the vehicle with all its necessary equipment and then some. I think the H2 is definitely a contender in this cut-throat segment and although Haval is not easily spotted on South African roads, that’s only due to it being fresh to SA. I predict that it will be rather prominent in the near future and here’s why.

The Concept

Marrying sporty good looks with more than capable performance, both on road and off, this family SUV has a winning recipe. Now you don’t need to limit yourself to one kind of lifestyle, when there are so many interesting routes to explore and the H2 allows you to do just that.

The Look

It reminds me of a true gentle giant- it has an impressive stature but conservative embellishments and body contouring that give it a classic and stylish appearance. The roof delicately declines into the rear while shiny strips of chrome compliments its overall aesthetic. The H2 is a large vehicle with a bold stance that is only furthered by a robust rig of 18-inch alloy wheels and sporty roof rails. Haval’s signature has been stamped on the bold chrome and also on the C-pillars. The luxury model also sports a panoramic glass sunroof for additional pleasure. The automatic Halogen headlights are enhanced with a height adjustment, a Follow Me Home Light Function and Daytime Running for a brightly illuminated drive, along with a stunning set of fog lights in the front as well as in the rear.

The Feel

I must say that I am highly impressed with the H2’s interior- for a budget-conscious vehicle, it’s not lacking in the least. Build form good-quality and durable materials, it offers soft touches on the panels and a luxurious feel of the upholstery. The driver’s seat is comfortable to sit in with a multifunctional, leather wrapped steering wheel, six way electrically adjustable seat and lumbar support. But the driver is not the only one benefitting from this vehicle’s quality design, there’s fun for the whole family. It’s also spacious and roomy (the sunroof also has part in that), and the head and legroom is reasonable, especially in the rear, and I know that this vehicle will be the ultimate road trip companion. The passenger seat has a four way adjustment and the leather seats aren’t only super stylish but also easy to clean and enjoyable to sit on. Even though it contains a full-sized spare wheel, the cargo capacity is still reasonably sized.

The Features

The 8.0-inch infotainment system is equipped with four low tone speakers, radio with MP5, USB, Auxiliary input, Hands Free Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay but no Android Auto. Climate Control, Cruise Control, front and rear electric windows, Electric Folding Rear View Mirrors, Heated Rear Window, Keyless Entry and Keyless Go has all been integrated for utmost comfort and a pleasant drive. Safety and security features include dual front, front side and rear curtain airbags, ABS with EBD, Brake Assist, Traction Control (TCS), Electronic Stability Control (ESP), ISOFIX child seat anchorage, Rear Door Child Locks, an engine immobilizer, Collision Fuel Cutoff, Tyre Pressure Monitor (TPMS), a rear Park Distance Control with a rear view camera and Remote Central Locking.

The Drive

This 1.5-litre turbocharged engine produces a mighty 105kW of power and 202Nm of torque. It has a fuel consumption of 9-litre per 100km and I have to admit although my achieving was higher in every drive, usually it was by a wee bit so, I would say that it is definitely doable. The automatic transmission offers for a smooth and enjoyable drive and will be highly revitalising through peak time traffic, and its irksome stop-and-go syndrome. Furthermore, the steering is light on the hand (surprising for such a sizable SUV) and the Park Distance Control does its job wonderfully when you’re piloting this performer. Speaking of, the H2 also doesn’t shy away when it comes to speed. It’s not a sprinter but a good nudge on the accelerator will have you comfortably cruising on the highway with all the other zippy engines, I think this can be accredited to the hard-working and dutiful turbo.
