In 1999 we were graced by the wonderful range that is BMW’s X5. From the get-go it was adored and now at their third attempt, BMW isn’t disappointing. The X5 M Competition is not only bewitching in the looks department, but this beaut also has a monstrous engine that makes it one of the most powerful SUV available, proving that this BMW is not only barking, but also biting and as the infamous Muhammad Ali said “it’s not arrogance if you can back it up”.
This five-seating SUV is packed with punch. With a capability to house the whole family and a mighty performance, its ideal for the romping family who are keen on escapades and excitement. It will get you where you need to be without question.
The X5 is a true statement maker. It’s tough and domineering looking with its enlarged body, tapering roofline and massive wheels. Sporting its signature kidney grille and chiseled flowlines - it’s not only oozing signature BMW sophistication but also typical appeal. Follow the smoothed roofline and you will find a cheeky upturned boot spoiler that perfectly finishes the rear off with a sporty tone. Xenon LED laser headlights are equipped with High beam Assist, a direction turning feature, adaptive light varying distribution, an automatic on/off and Daytime Running. Furthermore, it features LED front fog lights and rear fog lights. The X5 is definitely deserving of all the rave it’s receiving, and its stylish exterior is only testament of that.
Step inside and the signature styling continues. The X5’s interior is clearly inspired by the M5 when it comes to the steering wheel, sporty seats and paneling. With a neat and polished outlay and a new and exclusive spoked digital display, the cabin is rocking this new chic appearance. The driver’s seat is rather comfortable with a honeycomb stitched seat that is enhanced with a memory for the electric seat adjustment (this is also available for the passenger seat). With its massive frame, it’s obvious that the cabin would be spacious, and it certainly is with an abundance of head and leg room, if you have a family of giants, this vehicle would be for you. The 650-litre boot enlarges to 1870-litres when the rear seats are folded, this provides you with an abundance of space for the whole family’s baggage. It wouldn’t be a BMW if it doesn’t have additional features to make driving and traveling more enjoyable and that’s why it comes as no surprise that it also has multifunction steering wheel controls, a standard head up display, and a panoramic sunroof that can slide or tilt. I must say I like the fact that it has 12V power sockets in the front as well as rear which can make life much easier when you have to blow up the air mattress on camping trip or the kiddies can even utilize it to charge their electronics.
The infotainment system is equipped with Bluetooth Connectivity, Auxiliary input, USB, Navigation and Voice Control. For your owns safety and security, an abundance of safety and security features can be found, this includes Antilock braking system (ABS), Electronic brake distribution (EBD), Brake assist (BAS/EBA), Traction control, Stability control, Hill descent control, Downhill brake control, Lane departure warning with Lane Keep Assist as standard, Lane change blindspot warning assist monitor, Attention assist rest assist break alert, Automatic drive away locking, ISOFIX child seat anchorage, Hillstart assist, keyless and remote central locking. A total of six airbags completes this safety package and includes ‘bags for the driver, front passenger, front side and curtain. For your convenience, BMW has fitted the X5 with a start-stop function, automatic air conditioning, climate control, active adaptive cruise control, key less access start hands free key, front and rear electric windows, rain sensor automatic wipers, auto dim interior mirror, electric adjust mirrors, heated exterior mirrors and auto dim exterior mirrors. The camera for the park distance control is able to provide you with not only rear but also surrounding view for you to see everything happening around you while you execute the dreaded parallel parking with excellence and ease, of course.
This 4.4-litre turbocharged V8 engine proudly performs with a whopping 460kW of power and 750Nm of torque. This means that even though it weighs hefty 2.3-tonne it can still push through and blends in with other feather-weight vehicles on the road while also giving it the title of BMW’s fastest accelerating SUV. The Automatic M Steptronic Sport transmission and selectable driving modes makes for a pleasurable drive on any roads and terrains. It also has an adaptive and electronically adjustable sport suspension and an active slip differential for when things get wild. This also means that the ride is firmer and will make daily commuting wobbly but if you are more focused on adventure, and off-roading you won’t be worrying about weekday challenges, rather you would strap in and zip down the road with a beaming smile and a challenging twinkle in the eye.
