BMW 440i Gran Coupe
Engineered with excellence
From aeroplanes to motorcycles and even trains, BMW has conquered them all. As one of the biggest and most distinguished luxury brands in the world, with millions of their vehicles driving around, it’s nearly impossible to not know the name. With over a century experience in engines and mechanics, it’s safe to say that they are quite clued up when it comes to vehicles and vehicle luxury. I can certainly say that that is particularly striking by just observing the dealership. Fun fact - the headquarters in Munich is designed to look like their famous four-cylinder engine. This just goes to show how dedicated they are to their motoring cause.
Designed to turn heads and ignite envy, the 4 Series is an adaptation and advancement of the infamous and regal 3 Series. This coupe can seat four people and with its abundance of safety as well as convenience offerings, means it’s suited for anyone from a business woman to a mom with a small family. It has something for everyone to enjoy.
With a sensual fastback roofline and sophisticated styling, the German coupe will definitely be something to set tongues wagging. The Xenon headlights are adaptive and equipped with high beam assist, daytime running lamps, and an automatic on/off function for bright illumination and visibility. A true luxury feature that I admire is the fact that it has fog lights not only in the front, but also in the rear. It’s also integrated with a high-level brake light, rain sensing wipers and electric folding mirrors for a true experience of luxury and convenience. The 18-inch alloy wheels can be upgraded with an additional inch, but I think the standard set does just enough to give it a sporty and self-assured presence on South Africa’s roads. Overall, it’s a bold, striking vehicle with sophisticated accents and attributes to proudly declare its premium quality and status.
Quality and refinement are a given, so I wasn’t really surprised when I found chrome trimmings and double stitching inside the 440i - but what really struck me was the practicality of the cabin. Although limited by its sporty silhouette, the inside is quite spacious, meaning it is versatile enough to suit a parental lifestyle and transporting the kiddies’ projects around will be easy. The roomy interior is only aided by the sunroof that creates a voluminous atmosphere, and adds to the ambience and memories made along the way. It is also quite comforting to sit behind the multifunctional steering wheel, thanks to the leather upholstery and optional heated seats. With large windows and skinny pillars, even the coupe roofline doesn’t detract too much from the visibility. I adore the embossed M emblems on the front seats which finish the interior off, not only as a reminder of the vehicle’s athletic ability, but also a of its heritage as a premium brand.
I particularly liked the infotainment system - it’s advanced, easy to use and has a sleek and stylish appearance, thanks to the piano black detailing. It also features CD, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, auxiliary input and a ConnectedDrive Navigation package. For the driver’s convenience, comfort features such as electric windows, remote central locking, cruise control, climate control and keyless access are included as standard. My tech-savvy children also enjoyed the inductive phone charging feature because they didn’t have need to find the right connecting adapter (because everyone in the house has a different cell phone brand and charger) or get tangled up in the cable. The park distance control is integrated into the front as well as rear and features a camera at the back, which can also be upgraded to a surrounding view camera. The German’s have always prioritised safety into their engineering and this is why it comes as no surprise that this vehicle has an abundance of safety features including ABS, EBD, brake assist, traction and stability control. A total of six airbags can be found, including driver and passenger front and side bags, for additional protection if a collision should occur.
The 3.0-litre, six-cylinder turbocharged engine boosts out a whopping 240kW of power and 450Nm of power. This means it has a great performance and can reach 100km/h from standstill in a little over five seconds and it has a 250km/h top speed, limited to South African regulations. My test unit, the 440i, has an automatic transmission, which I thoroughly enjoyed because it made my driving experience pleasurable and I had no qualms with the stop-and-go at my daughter’s school. BMW has also redesigned the suspension, which, combined with enriched steering I noticed, had given the vehicle a much sportier handling, but had been a bit rough and hard over a few broken-tar spots on the road. The excellent engineering had it well balanced through tight turns and installed a confidence in me to give it just a bit more pedal to the mettle than necessary to get a move on. BMW has done it again - they’ve created a seemingly perfect athletic traveling companion with enough features to occupy the family and a terrific driving experience to satisfy the driver immensely. The excellence of this car is truly visible in this performer with its regal driving and overall pleasing experience. I think they have truly outdone themselves with the newest addition, yet again.
