A quality of its own
Known for its advanced driving dynamics and refined comfort, the newest Audi A7 stacks up against its rivals rather impressively. How can it not? The pure-blooded German has been around for over a decade. Its overall brilliance counts almost as much as sheer brand appeal and it’s always a sure favourite in the premium executive car segment. It’s sporty and elegant, and is impressively accentuated through classic German design which I admired from the get-go, when introduced to my test vehicle.

The Concept
A combination of a sedan, a fastback coupe and a hatchback, the A7 is uniquely designed to suit the dynamic family. With sedan-like qualities such as the spaciousness of five seats, it can comfortably accommodate a medium-sized family, while the fastback coupe and hatchback integration hints at its athletic capability. I think that this is the ideal vehicle for a busy mom with a wild and adventurous streak, or the lady that wants to get places, fast.

The Look
The A7 demands attention from the other road users with its striking design build and sleek silhouette. I personally like the sloped roofline and tailgate, which offers the vehicle an edgy profile. But the true showstopper is the continuous LED light strip incorporated into the rear. Xenon headlights are equipped with a directional turning function as well as adaptive headlights for a brightly illuminated journey. Furthermore, daytime running lamps, high beam assist and a light sensor auto on/off feature have also been added for additional security when driving. A set of 19-inch alloy wheels finishes things off and makes for a proud stance and brooding road presence. I appreciated the overall appearance of the vehicle with its chiselled flowlines and refined features. Audi has really outdone themselves with the attractive design and I have no doubt that the rest of South Africa will also be in love with its dazzling appearance.

The Feel
Inside this beauty, its sedan DNA is quite evident by the spaciousness of the cabin. The boot can hold 500 litres and when keeping in mind the hatch physique, this is both impressive and very practical. Luxurious, modern, classy, pleasant and up to date are but a few words I would use to describe the interior. This is due to classy features such as the excellent 12.3-inch Audi virtual cockpit that can display a high-resolution 3D map, and the plush synthetic leather upholstery. I must note that the driver’s seating is very comfortable, thanks to the lumbar support and the seating position also provided me with a good view of my surroundings. The sun roof also gave the cabin a light and airy feeling. Overall, I appreciated Audi’s perfect balance of allowing this car to be both family-friendly and elegantly executive with zero compromise when it comes to style and sophistication.

The Features
The multi-informational infotainment system is equipped with navigation, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity, a USB port, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and voice control, which can all be conveniently accessed via the multifunctional steering wheel’s toggles. Safety features include an Antilock braking system (ABS), Electronic brake distribution (EBD), Brake assist (BAS/EBA), Traction control, Stability control, an automatic drive away locking system, electric child proof safety lock switch, ISOFIX child seat anchorage and a tyre pressure monitoring system. With airbags including driver, front passenger, front side, and curtain airbags, the whole family is guaranteed of protection. Six airbags can be upgraded to eight, with additional rear side airbags for even more peace of mind. Audi is known for being generous with comfort and convenience. This includes features such as start-stop functionality, an auto engine stop-start-idle eco-stop, hill start, climate control, heated seats, remote central locking, keyless access, hands-free start, electric windows, rain sensing auto wipers, auto-dim interior mirror, electric adjust mirrors, heated exterior mirrors and a camera for the park distance control and an active rear spoiler. Audi has clearly put a lot of thought into these features and specifications to provide the driver with excellence and optimal comfort.

The Drive
The 3.0-litre turbo petrol V6 engine boosts out 250kW of power and 500Nm of torque, which is impressive for such a slick-looking sedan. With such robust outputs, one would expect it to sip rather heavily from the fuel tank; still, it’s claimed fuel consumption of 7.2-litre per 100km is decent for a vehicle of this calibre.

I’m happy to say without hesitation that I loved this drive - for a vehicle of this size, it handles like a much smaller, more agile sedan, and is sleek and smooth over lumps and bumps. There was almost no jolting when I took it through the patchy streets of Jozi. This is due to Audi’s intuitive engineering and uncompromising promise to provide their clients with utmost refinement when behind the wheel. The seven speed S tronic transmission did not disappoint one bit and combined with the quattro all-wheel drive technology made for ample grip around corners and at speed. Overall, I adored every minute on the road with this beauty. This is a powerful yet graceful vehicle, much like the women I envision driving it. I felt a healthy amount of confidence behind the wheel, too, and this is why I would gladly recommend it to any lady seeking a bit of fun from her car.
