Fit more into life
Volkswagen is known for producing eye-catching, safe and reliable vehicles that won’t cost you an arm and a leg, and the new Tiguan is no different. With a long list of safety features and an attractive design, it is a true embodiment of the German manufacturer’s intuitive engineering and uncompromising quality. It is larger, bolder and more stylish than its predecessor and boasts a versatile and luxurious feel.

The Concept
Seven seats mean that this is an ideal vehicle for a large family. It’s designed to perfectly fit in and flow with the busy city life, but it can also hold its own if it’s time for a weekend break-away. It is extremely adaptable - exactly what busy mom’s need.

The Look
The Tiguan has a sporty and progressive design, thanks to bold, distinctive character lines, and a longer, wider and lower stance. Flattering 17-inch Tulsa alloy wheels in the flared wheel arches round off the look elegantly. LED headlights are equipped with daytime running lamps, high beam control "Light Assist" and dynamic cornering lights that balance the front fog lights and ensure bright illumination every time. The chrome clad grille complements the sleek bonnet and proudly showcases the Volkswagen badge in the centre. It has a distinctive look, thanks to the elongated size, pitch black roof rails, and black body finishing, announcing ‘ready for wherever you want to go’. It’s the perfect companion for a big family with its bold design, off-roading capability and vast versatility.

The Feel
The Allspace is, as the name suggests, all about space. Thanks to a 110 mm increase in wheelbase length, the Tiguan is larger than ever and spacious enough to fit seven people, although the third row might be a little cramped, as is the general issue of cars in this class. Still, it has a massive 1 655-litre boot if the seats are all folded, and the second-row bench can slide 60 mm to offer more functionality and legroom. This is appreciated seeing how tricky it can be to access the last seat, which we suggest you reserve for the smallest family members. Handily, there is an electronic tailgate for easy accessibility. The cabin is comfortable and ergonomic with a stylish and urban feel; there is a bespoke leather-clad steering wheel and aluminium inserts for added class. Visibility is fantastic thanks to a high seating position and massive windows.

The Features
The 6.5-inch touchscreen infotainment system is equipped with radio, CD, MP3/WMA compatibility, eight speakers, SD Card slot, Bluetooth connectivity, USB port, Apple interface and an auxiliary input. As Volkswagen is as German as they come, it is no surprise that the Tiguan is jam-packed with safety specs and arguably considered one of the safest SUVs on South African roads. Safety features include ESC, ABS, EDL, multi-collision brake system, auto-hold function by means of electronic parking brake, including hill-hold assist, a fatigue detection (Rest Assist), airbags for driver and front passenger, front, rear and side curtain airbags, ISOFIX child seat anchorage, front and rear park distance control, a tyre pressure monitoring system, an antitheft alarm system with interior monitoring and a towing protection, electronic immobilizer. A safety cage is integrated into the SUV to protect passengers if a collision is to occur in the front, side or rear, while advance thermos-formed steel B-pillars reinforce the top of the vehicle. Adaptive airbags adjust to the crash’s severity and if side impact has occurred, special door sensors will deploy the curtain airbags.

The optional head-up display places the required trip data (such speed, traffic signs, assistance systems and more) conveniently in the driver’s direct eye line so as to keep their focus on the road rather than on the dashboard and instrument cluster. Rest assist alerts the driver visually and audibly when it’s time for a break in order to keep the driver fresh and vigilant during long, family road trips. The additional adaptive cruise control automatically adjusts to the driver’s set speed, and it can detect approaching vehicles and brake accordingly as to maintain the selected distance. Comfort and convenience features include electrically adjustable, foldable and heated side mirrors, front as well as rear electric windows, front and rear dusk sensor, a 12-volt power socket, three-zone air conditioning and cruise control.

The Drive
This 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbocharged engine is able to produce 132 kW of power and 320 Nm of torque. Fuel consumption is average for the segment, with a 7.7-litre per 100 km figure and a 60-litre fuel tank. It is the perfect vehicle for relaxed city driving, highway cruising and mild 4x4-ing thanks the Driver Profile Selection, which personalizes every journey by altering the different driving modes. Select one of the five driving modes to change the SUV’s performance as well as driving experience. Soft-roading, as we call it, is enjoyable thanks to a bucket full of driving aids such as ABS+, hill descent control, audio warnings and capable underpinnings. The seven-speed DSG transmission is top-of-the-range and it feels intuitive and smooth, especially combined with the 4MOTION all-wheel drive setup. Shift paddles are nestled behind the multi-functional steering wheel for those who prefer a more hands-on approach to their driving. Overall, the Tiguan Allspace is a highly enjoyable drive that inspires confidence and is free from hassles and complications. The firm road-holding, direct steering and absorbent suspension come together for a truly pleasant experience all around.
