Haval H6 C
Experience the quality
Since the start of their trading in South Africa, Haval has quickly become a hot seller. To date they have sold more than 14 000 units in this country alone, and with 46 dealers nationwide, it’s safe to say that they have quickly became a success at that. And how can they not? Building a reputation for producing quality and well-specced vehicles at reasonable prices, Haval appeals to a wide range of South Africans. I had the opportunity to test drive their H6 C and can definitely say that it made a big impression on me.
A beautiful, contemporary five-seater compact SUV with a five-star safety rating, all the bells and whistles, and a tidy entry price. This makes it the perfect vehicle for moms of small to medium-sized families, and ideal for safely ferrying children around town. It will also be highly appreciated on family vacations, thanks to its spaciousness and dependable nature.
Thanks to the black D-pillar on the Haval H6 C, this particular SUV has the looks of an elegant and modern urban traveller. It is also becoming more common on South African roads, and the bold, broad lettering on both the front and rear brings up memories of more premium Swedish counterparts. The auto-on halogen headlights are able to adjust according to height to ensure bright illumination and a safe journey every time, while also providing the vehicle with a sporty profile. I particularly like the 19-inch alloy wheels, which gives it a bold stance and self-assured road presence. Overall, I must say I’m pleased with the brand’s design efforts. Haval have done a superb job with the way this vehicle looks – it looks elegant, classy, self-confident, and very, very posh!
Sitting upfront in the Haval H6 C is great – there’s loads of visibility from the driver’s seat, and ample space for both driver and front passenger all around. The back isn’t too restricted and can seat three children with ease (although taller adults may have a harder time on extended journeys. I love that the back seats can also recline, meaning there is comfort to spare for everyone on board. The finishing in the cabin is of good quality, with excellent materials used and lovely levels of seat comfort. The dual zone climate control system is also installed with rear vents to ensure comfortable temperatures throughout the whole cabin, something the kiddies were grateful for in the freezing weather, recently. Mom, on the other hand, was thoroughly impressed by how comfortable the driver’s position was, thanks to the four-way adjustable synthetic leather clad steering which is equipped with audio, Bluetooth and cruise control toggles and an eight-way electrically adjustable driver seat and lumbar support. Furthermore, the cabin has been enhanced with a 3.5-inch display. The rear seats also split in a 60/40 manner to allow the boot to grow from a 247-litre space to a 1146-litre boot, which is roomy enough to accommodate the family’s large luggage. The rear seat splits and folds, which also means that awkward and bulky items such as a curtain rod will be a breeze to transport.
For the price you pay for this SUV, you would think there would be little on board in the way of technology. But you would be wrong. The list of comfort and convenience features is long – with the likes of ambient lighting in a variety of colours, illuminated sill plates and even puddle lights added to dual-zone climate control, remote central locking, keyless entry, a start button system, Bluetooth hands free, multifunction steering wheel and a top-notch eight-inch touchscreen infotainment system. This is an extensive list. To ensure a safe and protected drive, a range of safety features have been installed as standard, too. This includes park distance controls with a surround-view camera, hill ascent as well as hill descent control, an Automatic levelling system (ALS), ESP (Electronic Stability Program) and a TPMS (Tyre Pressure Monitoring System). A total of six airbags complete the standard consignment, consisting of dual-stage front SRS, side and side curtain airbags. It’s quite clear that Haval’s engineers have walked the extra mile to ensure that their clients are always thoroughly satisfied with cabin and ride quality, and also to give them total peace of mind knowing that their family is protected with every trip.
An eager 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine lies at the heart of the H6 C. It produces 140 kW of power and 310 Nm of torque and uses a slick-shifting six-speed dual-clutch gearbox. Although it is a bit thirsty with a 9.8-litre per 100km claimed fuel consumption, I must admit that even though I’m prone to have a bit higher usage than most, the H6’s was considerably higher. But I think I speak for many moms out there that I will much rather fork out extra cash to guarantee my family’s safety. This is a front-wheel drive, so not necessarily suited for off-roading, but perfectly suited for the city-dweller. Take-off is easy, despite the bulk of the vehicle, and even overtaking on the highway is an effortless task. Overall, the drive was pleasant for me as well as the family, thanks to the superior driving quality and loads of comfort features. I would definitely give Haval a well-deserved pat on the back for producing such a high quality, refined vehicle.
