A car with character
The Ford Mustang Shelby has been an immediate hit from the time when it was released in the 60s, and even more so when the new versions hit our shores. Since the start, nine million of these cars have found homes with Ford lovers all over the world. The Mustang is one of the most admired and renowned V8 nameplates, and its status and fun-to-drive nature make it an enthusiast’s favourite. For their 50th anniversary, the Michigan-based brand has launched the upgraded and redesigned GT500 to the motoring market. Lavonne Davis and her team at Motus Ford Kempton Park are elated to share this legendary vehicle with us.

The Concept
A continuation of a legacy, the Mustang is bigger, better and bolder now than the initial icon was. A true pony car, the Mustang continues to dominate with an extensive range of technological and mechanical advancements and achievements that make is a blast to drive.

The Look
The Ford coupe is the exact definition of desirability on wheels – at least, in our books. With its all-round LED lights and chiselled flowlines, it is sure to be turning heads wherever it goes. The facelifted design is aggressive and sporty yet still pays tribute to its predecessor with classic Mustang accents, such as the shiny stallion proudly displayed on the pitch-black grille. The front end has been redesigned and now boasts a new front splitter and extra air scoops, while the rear hosts a raised blade spoiler for better aerodynamics and performance. The standard 19-inch Ebony Black painted wheels and Brembo six-piston front brake callipers provide the muscular car with an assertive and domineering presence while balancing it seamlessly with an athletic attitude. Ford has catered to all their versatile ‘Stang devotees by launching the gorgeous Fastback in either coupe or convertible body styles to choose from. Available in a range of sporty colours, including Twister Orange, Rapid Red, Shadow Black and Grabber Lime, to name but a few, there’s nothing about this car that wasn’t designed to stand out.

The Feel
Inside the Mustang, you’ll find standard leather upholstery, climate control and heated front seats that also adjust with power and lumbar support. The racy heritage echoes through in the high-backed bucket perches, and the updated cabin shows off a nice mix between old-school driver’s car and modern nuances. Keeping with the ultra-modern, Ford has added a leather-wrapped parking brake and multi-functional steering wheel. A 12-inch LCD digital instrument cluster provides the driver with the ability to personalize the gauge layout – there are three designs to choose from: normal, track, or, my personal favourite, sport. The MyColor feature grants the driver the opportunity to customize the gauge hues to their preference, too. So not only will your shoes and lipstick match, but now also your alluring digital cluster as well.

The Features
The Mustang GT has been equipped with cutting-edge technologies that include standard intelligent access, MyKey, a rear-view camera, cabin particulate air filter, automatic headlights with wiper activation, climate control, voice-activated navigation with pinch to zoom capability, a reverse sensing system and cruise control. As standard, the intuitive Track Apps has been integrated into the instrument panel as well, consisting of an accelerometer which displays lateral and longitude g-force, an acceleration timer, brake performance that measures braking time and distance, as well as performance metrics. Add-on’s and accessories are plentiful, if you want to improve your ride a little. Noteworthy options include adaptive cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, pre-collision assist with pedestrian detection, AEB, electronic stability control (ESC), lane departure warning and keeping system, forward collision warning with brake support, blind-spot monitor and rear cross traffic alert. The 8.0-inch Ford Sync 3 touchscreen infotainment system is equipped with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and the intuitive Ford Sync Connect that allows the user to command and observe the Mustang by means of a smartphone App. Optionally, the 4G LTE mobile Wi-Fi hotspot will simplify your life, too. Safety elements include dual front airbags, front-seat side-impact airbags, knee airbags, side-curtain airbags, a personal safety system for the driver and front passenger, LATCH lower anchors as well as tether anchors for car seats, and a post-crash alert system.

The Drive
The powertrain at the heart of this monster produces a staggering 306 kW and 530 Nm of exhilarating torque, which effectively blew us away. The sensation and feeling of that power is clearly what the Mustang was designed for, and makes for a thrilling experience behind the wheel. I’ll be honest – flooring the accelerator and hearing the ‘Stang respond is truly thrilling, but it’s also the reason for the eye-watering 12.3-litre per 100 km fuel consumption figures. This is not a car you buy if you have a fuel budget to stick to – it’s been exclusively designed to excite, to be a fun and engaging drive, and to make a scene doing so.

Where to Find it
If you would also like to experience the Mustang’s magnificence, you can find this attractive American at Motus Ford Kempton Park or visit for more information.
